Research:
I've started my research for my second project that is focusing on addressing Autism. As I'm not sure what my final outcome is going to look like yet. I've looked at existing pieces of work that can be used as inspiration. So far I have watched animations and read web articles.
The first piece of work is an animation that provides a brief summary about Autism. I think that this piece is effective as the characters within the animation clearly communicate the feelings that a person with Autism may be feeling. Therefore, this animation is communicating the experience.

The next piece of work that I found is another animation. It is called ' Amazing Things Happen.' The creator has targeted this animation for educational purposes. The creator stated how they noticed at their child's school that wasn't enough useful awareness material in the classroom about children with Autism. They have stated " It became clear that there was a lack of engaging visual material about Autism for children." They carry talking about the purpose of the animation and how educating young children about this subject is important. The creator stated " Everyone can benefit from increased knowledge of Autism, but perhaps the most important group we can be targeting is children. Educating our children helps us raise a new generation of tolerance and acceptance- which would improve the futures of people on the spectrum."
After watching this animation myself, I could see how the visual style is well suited for this target audience and the narrator explains the topic really well so that young children can understand.
The final piece of work that I've found was illustrated by Masha Manapov. This piece of work was made to go alongside an article. The article focuses on how a many adults with Autism use the technique of camouflaging. Meng-Chuan Lai, a researcher, explains how camouflaging is when " Adults with Autism mimic the behaviour of people not on the spectrum." They continue with explaining the meaning of camouflaging as " If you have a range of Autism characteristics inside, but you don't show it outside by your external behaviour, that can be defined as showing camouflaging."
Based on all of this , I think that this piece of illustrated work works well with this article. The different coloured character designs could represent how each person deals with the technique of camouflaging different and how they keep things to themselves. Within this article, they also talk about how many adults use camouflaging to help keep jobs, relationships etc.
Therefore, this piece of work is successful and effective as it visually communicates an experience that many Autistic people have to go through and how it can be challenging.
I'm now going to carry on with my research as see if there any other illustrators/ products that can be used as inspiration. This will help me to be able to think of my own ideas and make m own visuals.
